KZN Police Stations to get Sewage Treatment Plant

19 June 200

Best Water Technology (BWT) Africa has been awarded a R2.5m contract by Thuthuka Group Limited (TGL) to design and build three packaged sewage treatment plant for the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Public Works.

Gauteng-based BWT Africa specializes in the design, manufacture, installation and commissioning of water, sewage and wastewater treatment plants, related products and technology, and shares offices with water engineering firm TGL.

The sewage treatment plant are to be installed at Paddock SAPS, Highflats SAPS and Donnybrook SAPS, respectively. BWT Africa CEO Terry Mtshweni explains: "All of these sites have been utilizing an outdated septic tank system that was just not coping with the required capacity."

The three packaged wastewater treatment plant each have to cater for between 150 and 300 people, producing some 200l of wastewater per head per day with an anticipated COD load of 800mg/l.

The design encompasses anoxic and aerobic reactor technology. The existing septic tanks will continue to be used as receiving tanks fitted with macerating pumps to feed the plant. A mechanical bar screen is utilized to remove any foreign matter. From there the waste flows to an anoxic reactor, followed by an aerobic reactor fitted with fine air bubble diffusers. Sedimentation occurs in a GRP clarifier, with the ras/was (return activated sludge/waste activated sludge) being recycled to the anoxic reactor and then drawn to the sludge drying beds.

The effluent from the GRP clarifier is passed through a chlorine contact vessel, where it is dosed with chlorine to ensure that it complies with DWAF's general limits before being discharged to the environment. The effluent from the sludge storage bed is similarly treated. The solids from the sludge drying beds are collected and disposed of at a landfill site.

The contract was awarded to BWT in March 2007 with delivery scheduled for the end of July. The detailed design of the plant was done by TGL using BWT technology and the actual construction of the plant is being undertaken by ISG in Chloorkop, with BWT managing the whole project for TGL.
